About

Amalia Fonfara (Nanortalik, 1985) works as an animist artist and shamanic practitioner based in Trondheim. She holds an MA in Fine Art(2015) from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Fonfara works interdisciplinarily within practices of embodied knowledge, animist traditions, and the arts. Her work is often socially engaged in local environments, focusing on body, memory, and land-connectedness.

An important aspect of her work is how ritualistic practices and magical thinking within the art can create space for reclaiming sacred relations with the more-than-human beings. And further, how these practices can bring healing to our communities, wounded by colonial structures and the agendas of modernity, where human culture is separated from nature.

Based within ritual-performance and new media, her artistic work embarks on an ontological investigation of the crossings of inner and outer landscapes through introspection of animism and ancestral healing practices, where the essences of soul and materiality are woven into a holistic comprehension of life.

"Amalia is a gift and a mentor to others who work with energies and the spirit world. She has helped me in situations where no one else had the skills or knowledge to do so. I am very grateful to have her in my life."

Testimonial Two

"It was my 3rd course on shamanism, the first time in Norway. Amalia succeeded from the first moment in creating an atmosphere of security and openness where I felt welcome and authentic. At the same time, there was a clear structure and message. I went home with a sense of clarity and coherence."

-Andrei

Testimonial Three

"In 1-1 sessions or courses with Amalia, it's always a good, special, and warm energy that I can't find anywhere else, and I always feel at home, whether it's a 1-1 session, course, or drum circle. So it's like being in another world, and it's a healing and rewarding time at her sessions and course."
